Who needs the fuss and mess of ceramic tile and grout when in just a couple of hours you can “tile” a great tray like this party?
Supplies:
- Unpainted wooden tray
- Sandpaper
- Clean cloth
- Matte latex paint, white
- Paper in two or three solid colors
- Glue (optional)
- Piece of glass, cut to fit the serving tray
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Square decorative paper punch
- Leaf decorative paper punch
- Lamination / sticker machine with an adhesive cartridge (optional)
Instructions:
- Step 1.
- Sand the tray smooth, then wipe away the dust with a clean, damp cloth. Allow the tray to air dry for a few minutes before painting it white. You need to apply several coats of paint for complete coverage; if so, allow each coat to dry before sanding it lightly and applying the next coat.
- Step 2.
- Cut the paper into widths that will fit your lamination/sticker machine; then following the manufacturer’s instructions, run the paper through the machine to apply adhesive. Alternatively, you can lay the tiles using regular craft glue; just wait until you are ready to start adhering them in place before applying the glue.
- Step 3.
- Use decorative paper punches to create your tiles from the adhesive-backed paper. For this project, use a simple square punch and a leaf-shaped punch.
- Step 4.
- Before sticking the tiles in place, take some time to lay out your design, using a ruler to ensure an even grid. When you’re satisfied with your layout, you may find it useful to indicate the placement of the tiles with very light pencil marks.
- Step 5.
- Adhere the square tiles in place, working on one row at a time. If you are using glue, avoid bubbling and wrinkles by applying the glue to the back of each tile a you go, using a small paintbrush to ensure a thin, even layer.
- Step 6.
- After you’ve laid all the square tiles, snip the leaf-shaped tiles in half. Carefully adhere the half-leaf tiles.
- Step 7.
- Slip the sheet of glass in place over the mosaic; then load up the tray with hors d’oeuvers;
