These stunning metallic foil starbursts would look perfect in a contemporary setting. A varied group of three of four colored ones displayed against a plain, colored background will give a powerful effect. These shiny surface of paper is rather delicate and marks easily, so care should be taken when working.
- Step 1.
- Cut a length of paper 94cm (36 in) long and 11cm (4 ½ in) wide. Fold up concertina style, making each fold 2 cm (3/4 in) wide. Make sure the folds are as even as possible.
- Step 2.
- When the whole length has been folded, hold the paper tightly at one end as if you are holding a closed fan. Thread the needle with invisible thread and push through all the thick nesses. Tie the ends of the thread together loosely.
- Step 3.
- Lay the end of the knot along the final fold of the fan and on the wrong side of the metallic paper. Place a strip of double sided tape along the fold, securing the knot beneath it. Remove the protective layer of the tape.
- Step 4.
- Open out the fan into a circle and press both ends together very carefully so they are stuck firmly together with the double-sided tape. If you want to hang the starburst, insert a length of invisible thread onto the join at this stage.
Note: To make a star with points, before opening up the fan, cut the outside edges to a point.
